Technology,
Jekyll
As mentioned in my previous post, I recently decided it would be a good idea to move my blog away from WordPress and onto GitHub Pages making use of Jekyll, the static site generator to simplify my site. I chose to do this for two simple reasons: My blog is very simple so doesn’t need the power of WordPress; I can’t resist tinkering with things. Realistically, the latter was the biggest driver in my decision. I came across this new idea that seemed interesting and decided to give it a go . Where to Start First of all, I had to look at what was needed to setup a Jekyll site. There are so many tutorials out there that this bit was easy. So I...

Outdoors,
Running
Ever since I started running I’ve outright dismissed the idea of joining a running club. I started running in an effort to get fit without having to go to a gym, or go to a swimming pool etc. It was simple, get dressed, go running. There were no barriers (other than bad weather) to prevent me going running so it seemed to be the best option. Once I started doing it regularly, I got to really enjoy it. I prefer running first thing in the morning so it’s always peaceful, there’s rarely anybody out and about to get in the way, there’s very little traffic and it’s brilliant. This is one of the big things that put me off joining a running club. I enjoy...

Technology,
Jekyll
At the back end of last year, I started migrating my various coding projects from SVN repositories stored on Google Code to Git repositories stored in multiple locations1. I found two different places for hosting my new Git repositories based on my specific needs. Firstly, the code for work needed to be kept private, but the rest of my code didn’t really matter. There is a lot of choice out there, but I wasn’t looking to part with any cash. Through a little bit of research, I came across the following options that appealed to me: Bitbucket - which allows for unlimited public & private repositories, but a limited number of collaborators (5 user maximum); GitHub - which allows for unlimited public repositories only, and...

George,
Milestones
George is now another year older so how has the second year gone? Well, it’s been very different to the first year! Having recovered from his illness over the new year, George got back on his feet and hasn’t really stopped since. Rosie has had to open the eyes in the back of her head to try to keep up with him. Unfortunately, just before his first birthday, we discovered George has nut allergy so that has been interesting, considering we used to cook everything in groundnut oil and peanut butter was our favourite breakfast addition. Nevermind, we have adapted quite well I think and George hasn’t had any problems this year so it’s all good . Over the year he has definitely developed his...

Reviews
Happy New Year all! As seems to be customary for blog writers, I thought I would do a bit of a year in review for 2013, so here it is. Achievements At the start of the year, I officially became a student once again (although I started the course in November last year) as part of the 20Twenty Leadership for Construction programme run by Cardiff Metropolitan University. I was somehow stitched up with this through work . The course consisted of numerous 2 day blocks of teaching across the year, three essays and culminated in a Strategic Growth Project. I completed it at the beginning of November with good marks in all my assignments. I have not yet been given the overall final grade, but I...

Race Details Event Royal Park Foundation Half Marathon 2013 Date & Time 06 October 2013 09:30:00 Distance Half Marathon Type Road Race Time (PB) 1:48:10 (1:30:28) Well I did it! On 06 October 2013 at 10:54 I crossed the line at the end of my second half marathon. This time it was the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon through the Royal Parks in London, and wow! It was an absolutely stunning route. We arrived at Hyde Park early on the Sunday morning to find a good portion of the 16,000 runners already there. The weather was beautiful and I was excited, after all, the route was due to pass the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace, as well as running through Hyde Park,...
